AIA (01299.HK) Opens 1.94% Higher, CLSA: 1Q VONB Beats Expectations

CLSA published a research report stating that AIA's Value of New Business (VONB) in 1Q increased 13% YoY (at constant exchange rates) and 17% YoY (at actual exchange rates), both 4% above market expectations.

During the period, Annualized New Premium (ANP) recorded strong growth of 20% (at actual exchange rates), while VONB margin edged down 1.5 ppts to 56%.

The broker noted that AIA Hong Kong and AIA China both achieved outstanding VONB growth of over 20% in 1Q.

Among them, AIA China's VONB rose 26%, driven by strong demand for long-term savings products, while VONB from protection products also increased 17%.

AIA Hong Kong's VONB grew 21%.

Despite overall weakness in the industry broker channel, AIA Hong Kong still recorded YoY and QoQ growth in VONB, and its performance should outperform peers.

<Research> UBS: AIA (01299.HK) Mainland Visitor Business Differs from Cross-border Securities Trading; Reiterates Buy Rating

UBS issued a research report noting that, as cross-border securities trading regulations tighten, some investors are concerned about regulatory risks related to Hong Kong mainland visitor (MCV) insurance business, which contributed 51% of AIA Hong Kong's value of new business (VNB) in 2025 (or 20% of AIA Groups VNB).

AIA (01299.HK) stated that the mainland visitor insurance business has operated under a well-established framework since 2004, with the core requirement being physical presence (i.e., purchases must be conducted within Hong Kong).

In addition, AIA emphasized policy direction toward integration into the Greater Bay Area, such as establishing insurance service centers in the region.

UBS believes these comments are consistent with its previous views, adding that the core demand drivers for Hong Kong insurance among mainland visitors include higher expected returns (6% to 6.5%, compared with around 3.5% in mainland China) and access to a broader range of investment options.

The bank further noted that, in terms of competitive landscape, AIA Insurance's market share by annualized new premium (ANP) declined by 3.3 ppts to 12% between 2023 and 2025, mainly due to certain companies significantly expanding their broker channels and bancassurance players being able to reach mainland visitors earlier in the customer journey (i.e., at the bank account opening stage).

AIA Insurance adopts a disciplined approach to channel distribution and prioritizes value creation, with market share not serving as its key performance indicator (KPI).

Amid the deposit migration trend in mainland China, AIA Insurance remains focused on long-term protection and savings products rather than short-term deposit-substitute offerings.

On regional expansion, the company previously guided that regions newly entered since 2019 (such as Sichuan Province) could achieve a compound annual growth rate of 40% in VNB between 2025 and 2030.

UBS currently maintains a Buy rating on AIA, with a 12-month TP of HKD104.

<Research>HSBC Research: AIA Faces 3 Risks Including VONB Cut; 'Wait-and-See' Strategy

Since the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) announced enhanced regulatory scrutiny on May 22, AIA (01299.HK) 's share price has remained under pressure and underperformed the HSI by about 12 ppts, HSBC Global Investment Research said in its report.

Although its P/EV dropped to 1.1x, about 1SD below the three-year average, and some investors may see this as a buy-the-dip opportunity, the broker believed a "wait-and-see" strategy is appropriate at this stage and highlighted three key risks to monitor.

First, there are risks of downward revisions to VONB and higher policy surrenders. As marketing strategies become more cautious, growth in MCV business in Hong Kong may slow.

The market expected AIA’s VONB growth to be 14.6% and 15% in 2026 and 2027, respectively, with MCV contributing about 20% of VONB in 2025.

Under a bear case, if cross-border capital flows are subject to strict monitoring and the use of the USD50,000 annual individual quota to purchase life and investment-linked insurance products is prohibited, surrender risks could heighten.

Second, there may be further insurance regulatory measures in the future.

Third, there is a risk of P/EV multiple compression. Based on sensitivity analysis, the current share price of HKD70.25 implies about 4.5% EV downside to the broker's model.

Although AIA’s valuation has become more attractive relative to its historical range, policy and VONB growth risks remain elevated, HSBC Global Investment Research said.

The broker maintained its Hold rating on AIA with an unchanged TP of HKD81.

<Research> UBS Maintains AIA (01299.HK) Buy Rating, Market Appears to Have Largely Priced in Worst-case Scenario

UBS said in a research report that the market appears to have largely priced in the worst-case impact of Decree No. 837 on Mainland China Visitor (MCV) insurance business, assuming future value of new business (VNB) from mainland visitors would be zero.

The broker believes that as long as the regulatory outcome does not involve a complete ban on new business from mainland visitors, AIA (01299.HK) shares have upside potential and current concerns seem excessive.

UBS cited three supporting factors.

First, discussions with intermediaries such as agents indicate that operations, including sales and premium payments, remain stable.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s recent restrictions on bank investment accounts only target securities transactions and are unrelated to insurance purchases or payments.

Second, mainland visitor insurance business remains feasible under the regulatory frameworks of both Mainland China and Hong Kong.

Third, Hong Kong Financial Secretary Paul Chan made constructive remarks at an event on 10 June 2026, reiterating the central government’s strong support for Hong Kong.

In addition, benefiting from intensive promotional activities since mid-May, UBS expects AIA Hong Kong’s VNB performance in the second quarter may exceed market expectations.

Related News: Citi: Assuming Zero New Non-HK Resident Mainland Account Openings, Forecast 2028 HSBC HOLDINGS (00005.HK), STANCHART (02888.HK) PBT Only Down About 2%

UBS added that apart from regulatory uncertainties surrounding the Hong Kong mainland visitor segment, AIA’s other businesses remain fundamentally solid and the group has a strong track record in navigating crises.

The broker expects AIA to remain attractive in the Mainland China market, forecasting a VNB CAGR of 18% for FY2025-FY2030.

For new geographies entered after 2019, it targets a VNB CAGR of 40% for FY2025-FY2030.

The stock is currently trading at 1.04x its forecast 12-month forward price-to-embedded value (P/EV), with an operating return on embedded value (RoEV) of 16%, offering an attractive risk-reward profile.

The broker reiterated its Buy rating on AIA and maintained its TP at HKD104.

Fewer regulatory concerns; some 2Q26F headwinds

Our trip to mainland China at end-Jun, leaves us less concerned about capital outflow-related regulations adversely impacting AIA’s FY26F and FY27F VONB.

However, we see 2Q26F mainland China VONB temporarily impacted by industrywide bancassurance headwinds given stricter regulations introduced at end-1Q26.

We think Thailand 2Q26F VONB could still be weak due to ongoing margin pressure yoy offsetting a sales rebound, based on Apr and May data.

We still expect 1H26F operating profit after tax, net free surplus generation and CSM growth to continue to show inflexion points (Figs 41-46).

Reiterate Add, with an unchanged TP of HK$119. Remains top regional insurer pick.
